
In honor of Black History Month, we recognize Murray Atkins Walls (1899 - 1993). Murray Atkins Walls was a pioneering civil rights leader who worked for five decades to help integrate Louisville’s Girl Scouts, public libraries, department stores, hotels, restaurants, and schools. She served the Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana for over 20 years as a camp committee member, council board member, council vice president, volunteer trainer, and champion of civil rights. In honor of Black History Month, we recognize Carl Brashear, the first African-American master diver in the US Navy. Brashear was born in Tonneyville, Kentucky, in 1931 to a sharecropper family and raised in Sonora, Kentucky. Against all odds--facing racism, adversity, and the loss of his leg--Brashear refused to let anything stand in his way. His life is a powerful lesson in perseverance.

Oliver Lewis (1856-1924), the African American jockey who rode the colt Aristides, won the first Kentucky Derby on May 17, 1875. His time of two minutes 37.75 seconds set an American record over the mile-and-a-half distance.
